History

Jayco was founded by Lloyd Jay Bontrager in the Indiana town of Middlebury. Bontrager took the company’s name from his own middle name at his wife’s suggestion, using a blue jay in the company logo and mascot. Bontrager developed a fold-down trailer with a special lift system in 1967 and the business grew quickly as the demand for travel trailers increased.

 

The company has been family-owned for its entire history and draws the bulk of its workforce from the surrounding Mennonite and Amish communities. Bontrager grew up Amish and continued to practice these values in his company culture, which include a strong work ethic and dedication to quality craftsmanship.

 

Jayco expanded out of their small farm factory and built a factory in Kansas in 1970 to increase their production. By temporarily closing their plants in Canada and Kansas during the late 1970s energy crisis, Jayco was able to weather the storm and resume full production in the 1980s. Bontrager died in a plane crash in 1985, but the business continued to expand with help from new president Al Yoder, Jr. and Bontrager’s wife Bertha.

 

By the late 1990s, Jayco had produced and sold over 300,000 units, and in 2005, they built another factory in Idaho to help with demand. Today, the company employs 1700 people and sells over 25,000 RVs and trailers each year, making them the second-largest RV manufacturer in the world.

Jayco® RVs have offered customers the space they desire since the 1970s, when they created the first fifth wheel trailer with space to stand up inside the bedroom, where previous trailers had required campers to hunch down. Since 2003, Jayco has offered surround sound systems in all their trailers to boost entertainment options. The innovative Jayco Climate Shield protects campers against harsh temperature conditions, from over 100°F to as low as 0°F. The weatherproofing and strength built into the Magnum Truss roof systems help Jayco RV roofs to withstand 50% more weight than other roofs.
